Help Keep Our Sewers Flowing – Say No to FOG and “Flushables”
Protect Our Pipes: Don't Dump Fats, Oils, or Grease (FOG)
When fats, oils, and grease—commonly known as FOG—go down the drain, they don't just disappear. These substances harden as they cool, sticking to the walls of sewer pipes and causing costly blockages and backups.
Common sources of FOG include:
- Cooking oil and grease
- Meat fats
- Butter and lard
- Sauces and salad dressings
- Dairy products
What to Do Instead:
- Pour cooled FOG into a container with a lid and dispose of it in the trash.
- Wipe greasy pots, pans, and dishes with a paper towel before washing.
- Use sink strainers to catch food scraps and dispose of them in the trash or compost.
Think Twice Before You Flush
Many products marketed as “flushable,” such as wipes and hygiene products, do not break down like toilet paper. These items can clog household plumbing and cause major issues in the public sewer system and wastewater treatment facilities.
Only flush the 3 Ps: Pee, Poop, and (Toilet) Paper.
Even products labeled “biodegradable” or “septic safe” can create blockages when flushed. When in doubt, throw it out!
Your Actions Matter
By properly disposing of FOG and not flushing wipes or other non-flushable items, you help prevent:
- Sewer backups into homes and businesses
- Environmental contamination
- Expensive repairs to sewer infrastructure
Let’s work together to keep our sewer system healthy and flowing smoothly.
