Ayden-Grifton High School's Quiz
Bowl team recently participated in the 2004 Public Library Quiz Bowl
and even though they didn't come out with a first place win, they
came out winners in the eyes of many who witnessed the competition.
A-G's Quiz Bowl team sponsor, Linda Leich, says she is proud of the
way the team performed at the Quiz Bowl, held Saturday, February 7
at the City Council Chambers in Greenville and even though the team
didn't walk away with a win, she still feels they held their own and
made Ayden-Grifton look good. "I thought they did a good job,' Leich
said. "They represented our school well. I was proud of then. They
held their own." To prepare for the competition, Leich says the team
practices after school at least once a week and though there is no
particular way to be prepared for the competitions, Leich says the
team looks over books to stay updated on information that could be
asked in competitions. But for most, the Quiz Bowl is something you
can never be prepared for. Questions range from sports to current
events. In the Quiz Bowl held recently, there were three rounds.
Ayden-Grifton managed to get a 'bye' for the first round, moving on
to play J.H. Rose High School during the second round. Rose has won
the Quiz Bowl numerous times since the competition began, which was
in 1979. Rose has won the local Quiz Bowl every year for the past
six years. Ayden-Grifton took the county championship in 1990, 1991,
1992 and 1995. To be a member of Ayden-Grifton's Quiz Bowl team,
Leich says you have to take a test at the beginning of the year to
get accepted. Usually, only 12 members are accepted. For the Quiz
Bowl competitions, like the one held recently, only four team
members actually compete. Leich says those four are chosen by taking
another test. The four highest scores are the ones to compete. The
rest of the team is required to attend competitions to support their
fellow team members. The winner of the Public Library Quiz Bowl
advances on to the district contest, which will be held on Saturday,
March 20. District Champions move on to compete in the State Public
Library Quiz Bowl finals, which are held on April 24, 2004. Leich
says she felt the students were prepared for the match-up and were
proud of the way they presented themselves. Kim Averette, the Public
Library Quiz Bowl Coordinator, agreed, saying A-G is one of the
schools that has been involved with the Quiz Bowl competition for
years. Averette, too, says A-G had a good showing. "Ayden-Grifton
has been one of our long-term participants," Averette said. "I think
they did very well this year. They had a good showing." Although
this year's Public Library Quiz Bowl has come and gone, Leich says
A-G's Quiz Bowl team not only looks forward to next years but will
also participate in the Brain Games, a competition for Freshman and
Sophomores only. The Brain Games will be held on March 20 and will
be featured on WRAL, Channel 5 television a few weeks later, so be
on the look-out as Ayden-Grifton's best and brightest compete.
