Parade Information

Dear Shad Festival Parade Participant:

The 40th Annual Grifton Shad Festival Parade is scheduled for Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 10:30 a.m.

We really look forward to seeing you in our parade. Please return the registration form promptly.

The guidelines for this year’s parade are: (please read carefully)

1. Bands will line up in the Grifton School parking area no later than 9:30 a.m. Other entries will line up on Dawson Road.  Directions to lineup: drive down McCrae Street towards Grifton School, turn left on Church Street, then turn right on Cannon Blvd., turn right on Wall Street, and finally turn right on Dawson (heading west). If coming from Hanrahan Rd., turn south on Marvin Taylor Road which becomes Church St. Extension. Turn left on Cannon Blvd., right on Wall Street, and right on Dawson Road (heading west). Do NOT turn east on Dawson as you will be going in the wrong direction from others lining up for the parade. At many intersections on Dawson Road, there will be parade officials who will direct you to where your assigned spot in the parade is. Please note that Queen Street will be closed to all traffic after 9:45 a.m. Saturday morning and McCrae will be closed after 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

2. All buses or other vehicles not in the parade may park in the Grifton School parking lot. DO NOT PARK ON DAWSON ROAD.

3. Miss Grifton and Little Miss Grifton contestants, runners up and the 2010 Miss Grifton and Little Miss Grifton need to line up in the circular driveway in front of the school on Church Street with Little Miss Grifton and then Miss Grifton being last in line.

4. Bands and any other “performing” units are asked to stop in front of the reviewing stand and perform. Please limit performance to no more than 2 minutes. Bands are requested to play while walking along the parade route.

5. All motorized units are to be driven in the safest possible manner or they will be pulled from the parade by local police.  Children under the age of 18 must have an adult responsible for their safety while riding in the parade on motorized units. The safety of the spectators and participants are our top priority.

6. Parade awards will be presented at the reviewing stand at approximately 11:30 a.m. on April 17, 2010. Trophies will be awarded as follows: First Place Band (trophy and $200); Best Marching Unit (trophy); Best Unit representing Fish/Fishing Theme (trophy); Best Unit representing this year’s theme “Peace, Love & Shad” (trophy); Honorable Mention (trophy); and Mayor’s “Best Overall” Award (trophy).

7. Three Judges will judge the parade entries.

8. There is no charge for non-profit groups and individuals, church, school and Scout groups, etc. There is a fee of $25.00 for commercial entries and others advertising anything. Enclose the fee with the form attached. Make your check payable to Grifton Shad Festival.
