GRIFTON — A Community Tree Planting and
Identification Day was held in Grifton on Saturday, December 18 at
the Creekside RV and Trail Park.
The morning event, which was a part of Grifton’s Tree Program,
brought nice weather and an attentive crowd as many came out to
receive educational information on the importance of trees.
Grifton receive an Urban Forestry Grant to plant 101 trees in the
Creekside RV and Trail Park and Creekside Overlook Park. Twenty-five
of those trees were planted on Saturday, which included River Birch,
Willow Oaks and Bald Cypress.
John Sugg, certified tree arborist, assisted in the planting and
held educational sessions about the importance of trees. Sugg went
over several tree facts with those in attendance and then helped
with the planting of the trees as well as identifying them.
Grifton Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troops helped out with the planting
as did many other kids and their parents. According to Town
Administrator Michael Peoples, the event drew a nice crowd and got
everyone involved.
"It’s more of an educational activity for everyone," Peoples said.
The event, which began at 9:00 a.m., went on until noon, when a
lunch was served by Greg’s Pizza and Subs.
Peoples said he hoped the event would be something the town could do
every year to bring the community together.
"I’d like to get everyone involved," Peoples said.
