Grifton resident and business owner Mike
Houston feels volunteering shows responsibility for your family and
community, that’s why he volunteers his time to various
organizations in the Grifton area.
Houston’s latest volunteer work has been with
Grifton’s Planning Board, where he’s been a member for a year.
Houston, who is President of Houston Heating
and Air Conditioning, first got involved with the board when he was
trying to develop a mobile home park. To do so, Houston had to go
through the board for approval. This led Houston to want to get more
involved in the development of Grifton, so he joined the Planning
Board.
Houston is also a Scout leader for his son’s
Cub Scout Troop 424 out of Hugo, a role he’s had for the past four
years.
“They need a leader, so I volunteered,” Houston
said.
Houston is also an active volunteer in his
church, Sharon United Methodist Church, where he serves on a variety
of committees, like the Building Committee. Houston said he tries to
get involved in any community organization that will benefit his
family.
“It helps my family,” Houston said of
volunteering. “Anything that helps my family, I’m going to be
involved in.”
Volunteering would be impossible without the
help of Houston’s wife, Felicia, who Houston said volunteers along
side him in most volunteer activities. And to the Houston family,
volunteering helps the needs of the community, something Houston
said every citizen should try to take an active role in.
“If you’re giving your time, you’re being a
responsible adult,” Houston added.
