GRIFTON — The Ayden-Grifton Charger basketball
team was recognized as the first order of business at the Grifton
Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, May 11. Afterward the
board handled a variety of routine business issues.
Mayor Tim Bright presented a framed resolution
congratulating the Ayden-Grifton High School varsity basketball team
on its runner-up finish in the regional finals. Receiving the
resolution was Coach Bob Murphrey. “It is an honor to be recognized
by the board. It is nice when people in the community recognize your
accomplishments and appreciate us.”
The following items, all on the consent agenda,
were approved without discussion:
-Reduced the speed limit in Forest Acres and
the County Club area from 35 mph to 25 mph to be effective July 1,
2004. Commissioner Richard Hill questioned the item. Hill said he
did not oppose it but that he wanted to understand why it was
brought forth. Mayor said there have been some complaints in the
past in the areas of speeding.

state.
Street maintenance projects in Forest Acres and
on Cannon Blvd. and Dawson Street were on the board’s agenda. Town
Manager Michael Peoples said he didn’t think Cannon needed to be
addressed at this time because it needs to be repaved and should be
addressed later. He asked for approval to negotiate up to $6,200 to
try to accomplish the work in Forest Acres and Dawson Street. Bill
Smith stated, “It’s really good for the citizens, but tighten your
safety belt.”
