Grifton’s Blaine Humphrey chose to give back to
the community by becoming involved in Grifton and Pitt County’s
planning process.
Humphrey has been a member of Grifton’s
Planning Board since 2002 but was also on Pitt County’s Planning
Board until a few years ago.
"It was just too much," Humphrey said of being
on both boards.
Humphrey gave up his seat on Pitt County’s
Planning Board to spend more time with his two daughters but is
still a part of Grifton’s board and hopes to stay involved for as
long as he is able.
Humphrey said he chose to volunteer his time to
planning issues because that is where his experience lies. As an
Engineer, Humphrey feels he has the background that helps him to
make decisions to guide Grifton to growth.
Being on the Planning Board also provides
Humphrey the experience needed for his job, so is able to learn from
both directions.
"It’s almost like a win-win situation,"
Humphrey said.
Humphrey said time is sometimes an issue for
him, trying to balance his job, family and volunteer work but that
he manages to get by.
"I do the best I can," he said. "I just try to
spend what little time I can here and there."
As for volunteering, Humphrey believes there
are lots of people who want to volunteer but they need to find
something they enjoy doing so they enjoy the volunteer work.
"I know there are people around who want to
volunteer," Humphrey said. "They just need to find their nitch."
