LITTLEFIELD — Approximately one hundred twenty-three Ayden-Grifton High School Seniors are scheduled to graduate Saturday, May 29 at Minges Coliseum on the campus of East Carolina University. The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m.

The school’s concert band and orchestra, under the direction of Eric Jefferson, will provide the processional and recessional “Pomp and Circumstance” by Elgar. The Ayden-Grifton Chorus, under the direction of Crystal Patillo will perform the “National Anthem.”

Jayme Evvan Beacham, Senior Class Vice-President, will provide the welcome for those attending the ceremony and will also lead the audience in the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Jayme is the daughter of Marshall and Judy Beacham, of Ayden.

Jack Alexander “Alex” McCarter will introduce the class of 2004 and the Salutatorian and Valedictorian. Alex is the son of Tim and Peggy McCarter, of Grifton.

Anna Godwin will be one of two students speaking to fellow classmates. Anna will address the students with the topic, “Lessons from the Past that Enrich Our Future.” Anna is the daughter of Sherwood and Margaret Godwin, of Grifton.

Karlee Steinlein will also speak during the morning ceremony. Her topic will be “Think Big!” Karlee is the daughter of Paul and Leslie Steinlein of Ayden.

Principal Dr. Barbara Mallory will present the class of 2004 and diplomas will be presented by Pitt County Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Priddy, assisted by Ethel Sutton and Ed Tyer. Senior Class Advisors.

Closing remarks will be given by Senior Class President Crystal Nicole Garris. Crystal is the daughter of Edward and Yvonne Garris, of Ayden.

Senior speakers are chosen based on grade averages and their leadership positions during their high school years. Dr. Mallory said that averages were so close between Karlee and Anna that Valedictorian and Salutatorian would not be known until after exams.

Mallory also said that a required graduation practice would be held on Friday, May 28 at 8:00 a.m. and that all students graduating on Saturday must be in attendance.

Doors will open at 9:00 a.m. where a video of the Senior students will be shown while waiting for the ceremony to begin.

Mallory said that this year, about 15 faculty leaders will walk in with the class of 2004 and participate in the ceremony, because, according to Mallory, “it takes everyone to make this happen.”
