GRIFTON — The Grifton Board of Commissioners,
meeting in regular session last Tuesday, approved three voluntary
annexations.
Public hearings regarding the annexations
preceded the regular meeting. Once in session, the board wasted
little time in approving the three annexations. High Meadows
Subdivision, Phase II with an effective date of November 10, 2004
was the first board action followed by the annexation of Pinewood
Mobile Home park with an effective date of July 1, 2005 and the
annexation of two properties located on NC Hwy 11, owned by Charlie
L. Hardee, with a July 1, 2005 effective date.
Commissioners, in other consent agenda items,
approved a contract with the Rose Group to determine FEMA
regulations for the proposed pedestrian bridge location and the
participation in the Tourist Oriented Destination signs (TODS)
program with the Department of Transportation.
The board approved advertising property on Main
Street as surplus property with a beginning bid of $1,000.
Additionally, the board approved donating a surplus police vehicle
to the Grifton Fire Department.
The board revised a short-term lease agreement
with Verna West and Linda Sanders and also approved a variety of
routine budget amendments.
Commissioners approved the subordination of a
mortgage for Ms. Doris Trippett.
Commissioners took no action on the Bread of
Life Tabernacle’s request for a zoning ordinance text amendment.
Town Manager Michael Peoples said the Planning Board denied the
proposed text amendments and that further discussion may be
necessary.
The board also approved a Christmas bonus for
its employees. Commissioner Gene Fleming voted again the bonus,
saying that he was not opposed to paying employees, but it should be
in better wages.
The board also agreed to an appointment of a
steering committee for the pedestrian master plan study.
Commissioners decided to review the zoning code
update at their next workshop meeting.
The board okayed the fire department office’s
list before hearing several updates.
