include a police force, fire department, rescue squad,
water and sanitation services. Lenoir Memorial Hospital, Pitt County Memorial Hospital,
and ECU's Medical Center make quality health care a convenient reality. Two regional
airports serving Kinston and Greenville offer east access to national and international
flights.
Churches
offer worship and active social programs for every member
of the Grifton community.
Recreation
opportunities of all kinds make the Grifton lifestyle
relaxing and healthful. Golf, Tennis, little league, fishing, hunting, and swimming are
waiting for the sports enthusiast. Spectators can enjoy minor league baseball just 10
minutes away in historic Grainger Stadium and the excitement of NCAA Division 1-A college
football at East Carolina University. Add beautiful coastal beaches less than 90 minutes
away, and you have a wealth of enjoyable activities from which to choose.
Jobs & Industry
long a key attraction of Grifton are keeping pace with the
dynamic business growth of eastern North Carolina. From the major Du Pont plant
established in 1952 and the Weyerhaeuser processing plant, to the most current facilities
to accommodate the proposed Global Transpark, Grifton is located in the heart of business
growth and development.
Educational Institutions
stimulate learning for all ages. Grifton Elementary school
(K-8) is located in the heart of town, while Ayden-Grifton High School is only a 5 minute
drive north. Quality private schools are also available in Kinston and Greenville for
children in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. East Carolina University and Medical
School is only a 20 minute ride away, and both Pitt Community College and Lenoir Community
College offer collegiate, technical and continuing education curriculums.
Homes

attractive in Grifton. Housing developments and neighborhoods suit all tastes and budgets.
Our planned communities are a great place to raise families and enjoy a relaxed lifestyle.
History
There's a rich tradition of history in Grifton and southern
Pitt County dating back to pre-colonial times. On the banks of the Contentnea Creek, right
at the edge of town, a great battle between Tuscarora Indians and North Carolina colonists
marked a turning point in early North Carolina history. Antebellum farm life, Civil War
skirmishes, and the expansion of the Atlantic Coastline Railroad form other important
episodes in Grifton's growth and development. Our local historical museum is a rich
resource of information and artifacts, bringing history to life for residents and
visitors. Local works of art are displayed in the museum's lobby each spring as part of
the Shad Festival, a continuous growing tradition begun in 1971.
